Quicksilver - Neal Stephenson As the first part of eight books it is clear that Stephenson knows that he has all the time in the world to tell his story.

Daniel Waterhouse, the protagonist in two different times in his life, alternately runs back and forth as a member of The Royal Society and putters around on a ship on the New England coast.

It's dense, it's interesting, and I hope the rest of the books give me a compelling reason to move forward with them.
